What is an e-invoice?

An e-invoice is an invoice in a structured electronic format such as XRechnung or ZUGFeRD that software can read automatically. A plain PDF file does not count. Since 1 January 2025, all businesses in Germany must be able to receive e-invoices from other businesses. From 2027, companies with a prior-year turnover of more than 800,000 euros must issue e-invoices themselves, and from 2028 this applies to all businesses. prexma integrates e-invoicing into existing web applications and processes.
